Supporting People in the High Peak &
Derbyshire Dales

Voluntary and Community Services Peaks and Dales is a local charity providing vital support services to older, disabled and vulnerable people in the community across the High Peak and Derbyshire Dales.  We have offices in Buxton and Ashbourne, with some services available from Bakewell.  We also offer some of our Aspire services in Tameside.

Yes, it's here again - the chance to show volunteers in the Peaks and Dales how valued they are, and for them to share thoughts on volunteering.

In our Buxton office we have our VolunTREE (terrible pun)!.  If you currently volunteer anywhere in the High Peak, we invite you to write a ‘leaf’ telling us what volunteering means to you.  If you would like to add a leaf to the VolunTREE then call into our office on Eagle Parade during this week’s celebrations on Monday or Tuesday.

From Wednesday the 6th June the tree will be on display at the Green Man Gallery in Buxton which opens 10.30am to 4.30pm and 11.30am to 4.30pm on a Sunday. The gallery is closed all day Thursday.

In our Ashbourne office, there will be a Readycall Macmillan Volunteers' Tea Party, to say thank you to all the existing volunteers.  They are also hoping to recruit some lovely new volunteers too.  This is an open door event, where prospective volunteers can come and talk to the team about what we do an how they might both help and benefit from volunteering.  The Ashbourne office is situated on King Edward Street.

Do come along to one of our Volunteers' Week events!

Free Will writing service in support of Voluntary and Community Services Peaks and Dales!

I'm happy to announce that Nigel Davis Solicitors are offering us a free Will writing service for our staff, volunteers, clients and any supporters. They will not charge you for writing your Will, but suggest that you might instead make a donation to our charity of £100 for  having a single basic Will drawn up, or £150 for a pair of basic mirror (‘husband and wife’ style) Wills.

You can make donation by cheque payable to Voluntary & Community Services Peaks and Dales, and send it to us or drop by in person and see us at our Buxton or Ashbourne offices. You can also donate by Paypal - just click the 'Donate'button on the right hand column on this page.

Nigel Davis Solicitors’ head office is in Ashbourne, and they have a branch office in Uttoxeter; but they can also take your instructions and draw up your Will by email, by telephone and/or by post. They are also able to arrange home visits for older people or those for whom getting out is a problem.

For more information about these services please email enquiries@agriculturalsolicitors.co.uk or telephone them on 01335 346772, or visit their website www.agriculturalsolicitors.co.uk

Alternatively, or in addition, you may wish to leave a gift (sometimes called a ‘Legacy’) in your Will to Voluntary & Community Services Peaks and Dales. No matter how big or small, leaving a gift in your Will will make a real difference!

Our deepest thanks to Nigel Davis solicitors for this generous offer.

Replacing Tilly!

Those of you who use our Volunteer Transport in Buxton may have been transported in our small wheelchair accessible vehicle, affectionately known in the office as 'Tilly'.  Well, Tilly is now getting to be a ripe old age, and we feel it is time to put her out to pasture!

We are busy writing grant applications to help us raise money to replace Tilly, but we have a way to go yet.  We need to raise another £10,000 towards replacing the vehicle with a new, updated version.  This is essential to those older and disabled people in the area who need to access medical appointments, day care, therapeutic activities and so on, for whom public transport is not a realistic option.

Above - Tilly vehicle, not looking too bad, but she has just been washed!

Can you help us us carry on helping older, disabled and other vulnerable people to get to medical appointments, and to tackle social isolation by taking them to social and therapeutic activities?  We need to replace the vehicle soon, so any donations would be gratefully received.

You can donate by clicking on the 'Donate' button in the column on the right, or by sending a cheque made payable to 'Voluntary and Community Services Peaks and Dales' to either of our office addresses, or by dropping in to our Buxton or Ashbourne offices.  Or call us for details on 01298 23970.

Thank you

Grant keeps wheelchair loan service rolling in the Dales!

Our Ashbourne office has just received from a  £750 grant from Derbyshire Dales District Council’s Local Projects Fund.  This will help us to continue the service and ensure the wheelchairs we can loan out are kept in tip-top condition.  The grant will fund a regular monthly visit for maintenance, and also cover any spare parts, or if necessary, replacement of chairs.  This should mean that if you need a wheelchair, we should almost always have one available for loan if you phone in advance to book it.

The service is free of charge and only requires a £10 deposit for a loan of two weeks, which can be extended by agreement with the office.  Any deposits which are donated are also used to help support the service.  If you would like book a wheelchair, please call our Ashbourne office on 01335 348600 or 01335 348602.

Visit from Ruth George MP

We hosted a visit from Ruth George, MP for High Peak recently where she met a number of staff and volunteers, heard about our current work with people in need, current and future projects and some of the challenges in the sector at the present time.
Following her visit, Ruth commented: "It was great to meet the team at Voluntary and Community Services Peaks and Dales and learn more about the difference they are making to the lives of local people. I saw at first hand how services are designed around people in need, helping them to live safer and more fulfilled lives - I will be making sure that I do my bit to spread the word."
