The centre was established in 1982, it is principally involved in the provision of a comprehensive range of services to people in the local community, in particular older people, adults and children with physical, sensory or learning disabilities and to families. We also provide information and support to volunteers and volunteering organisations.
What Are We?
A Job Centre for Volunteers
If you want to volunteer in Buxton, any part of the High Peak or anywhere in Derbyshire, our role is to provide advice and information about the wide range of voluntary work opportunities. We can then undertake basic assessment and arrange introductions to those organisations in need of volunteer help where the interests of a particular volunteer are best suited.
A Recruitment Serivice for Organisations
The centre also assists with recruitment and a basic of volunteers for a wide range of voluntary and statutory groups. Through our free publicity channels we can mount special appeals to fill the outstanding needs of local organisations.
An Information and Advice Centre
For those groups using volunteers, we provide information on good practices in working with volunteers and give support to statutory and voluntary schemes in need of assistance.
A Support Service
To statutory and voluntary groups working with volunteers, we provide assistance with the development of new projects.
A Meeting Place and Link
We facilitate, through various forums, the exchange of ideas for local groups, serving as a forum and allowing them to provide mutual support, discuss topics of concern, arrange workshops and study sessions.

The Volunteer Centre is managed on a day-to-day basis by the Chief Executive Officer, Sue Howard. There are fifteen other part-time and full-time members of staff. For more information on the team select About Us > Meet the Team from the menu.
Policy decisions are taken by a management committee of twelve members. They meet regularly, at least once every two months. Three representatives are appointed by our principle funders; Derbyshire County Council, North Derbyshire Health Authority and High peak Borough Council. Volunteers are also represented on the management committee. For more information on the management team select About Us > Funding & Management from the menu.
We are located in Higher Buxton, right on the marketplace, two doors up from Sainsbury's supermarket and across the road from Buxton Methodist Church.
