Buxton Summer Club

Buxton & District Summer Club runs for the first two weeks of the summer holidays and provides exciting activities for 40 disabled children and young people who have physical and learning disabilities or challenging behaviour.

We employ three play leaders to run the club, two nurses to ensure the medical needs of the children are met and that they remain safe while in our care and a number of specialist care workers for those children with behavioural needs.

Additionally we recruit 40 young volunteers from schools to help out.  We train them in Makaton (a method of communication) and in managing challenging behaviour.  Our volunteers are enthusiastic and many come back in later years, the programme having raised their awareness of the needs of disabled young people.

All the children are transported to and from the club and some live as far away as New Mills.  Hiring accessible transport is very expensive but we feel it is essential to ensure parents/families a much needed break while knowing their child is having a good time and is safe at the club.

The club has its own management committee of local people and is a registered charity.  It cost £11,181 to run the club for a fortnight last year and ensuring we have sufficient funding is always an uphill battle.
